Item Upgrading: +1 to +15, Luck and the Chaos Machine
Last updated: 10 July 2026
On a fresh character, upgrade your main weapon first: push it to +9 with Bless and Soul jewels and leave your armour alone until the weapon is done. Kill speed compounds — a stronger weapon means faster kills, more drops and more jewels, so every later upgrade arrives sooner.
The first decision: what deserves your first jewels
New players usually split jewels evenly across their set. That feels safe and is almost always wrong. Armour keeps you alive, but on a reset server your gear is disposable for the first several resets — you will replace most of it within days. The weapon is the exception, because damage converts directly into farming income.
Two realm-specific notes on RiftMu. On the Speed Realm Summer Edition you start with a Blood Angel set in your inventory, so your defence is already covered and literally every early jewel belongs in the weapon. On the Permanent Realm (5000x), a couple of Bless in your armour is fine if a specific spot is killing you, but the weapon still comes first. Either way, spend cheap Bless freely and hoard the expensive path — +10 and above — until an item will stay with you for weeks. If resets are new to you, the reset guide explains why early gear is disposable.
Item levels +1 to +15: what actually changes
[Official basics] Every item level adds damage on weapons or defence on armour, and higher item levels also raise the stat requirements to equip the piece. The ladder has visual milestones — items begin to glow around +7 and the effect intensifies at the top levels — which is why a +13 weapon is as much a status symbol as a stat stick. Levels +1 through +9 are done with single jewels in your inventory; +10 through +15 can only be done through the Chaos Machine. Season 21 keeps this classic ladder underneath its newer systems, so everything here still applies on RiftMu.
The jewel ladder
| Target level | Method | Success behaviour | On failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| +1 to +6 | Jewel of Bless, one per level | Always succeeds [Official] | No risk |
| +7 to +9 | Jewel of Soul, one per level | Not guaranteed; the Luck option on the item improves the odds [Official] | The item loses levels; from +7 upward a failed Soul can knock it down hard [Official; exact behaviour varies by server] |
| +10 to +15 | Chaos Machine combination (item plus Jewel of Chaos plus Bless/Soul) | The machine shows a success rate before you combine; it falls with each step [Official] | The item can be downgraded or destroyed [varies by server] |
| Additional option | Jewel of Life | Raises the item's additional option one step at a time; can fail [Official] | A failure can strip the option [Official] |
Luck deserves its own sentence: it is an item property, not a jewel, and it both improves upgrade odds and adds critical damage chance in combat [Official]. If you can choose between a plain and a Luck version of the piece you plan to push, take the Luck version every time — over a full +9-to-+15 campaign it saves real jewels.
Chaos Machine: what moves the needle
The Chaos Machine lives with the Chaos Goblin in Noria [Official]. Before you press combine, the window shows a success rate — read it, because it is the only honest number in the room. Qualitatively, three things move it:
- The target level. Each step from +10 to +15 shows a lower rate than the last [Official].
- Luck on the item. A Luck item combines at better odds than a plain one [Official].
- Mix value. Adding extra jewels or valuable items to the combination raises the displayed rate up to a cap [Common on private servers].
On RiftMu the Chaos Machine runs boosted success rates compared with official-style settings, so the climb to +15 is far less punishing — but boosted is not guaranteed, and combinations still fail. What happens on failure (a downgrade versus outright destruction) varies by server and by level range, so make your first high-level attempt with an item you can afford to lose, never your only copy.
Upgrade order: weapon, wings, then the set
After the weapon hits +9, wings are the next priority: they add damage and damage absorption at once, which no single set piece matches. Then bring your set pieces up evenly — a set at a modest, uniform level protects better than one +13 helm on an otherwise bare character. Save the +13 to +15 pushes for gear you will still be wearing after your next several resets.
Know where the classic ladder ends, too. On RiftMu, +15 is the floor of the endgame, not the ceiling: the custom jewel line — Helix, Gold Helix, Kingz, High Kingz, Emperor, Supreme, Volt and Vibrant — drives the gear tiers above it. Supreme conversion into White Dragon-tier gear is boosted to 100% on RiftMu, and Volt then turns White Dragon-tier items into Volt/Fury gear, while the Emperor Jewel upgrades the Combo Ring. Those systems have their own guides: see the new jewels guide and the Combo Ring guide before you spend any of the rare jewels.
Zen and jewel budgeting
The Chaos Machine charges Zen per attempt [Official], and Zen is also your reset fund — on RiftMu a Grand Reset alone costs 50,000,000 Zen, so a reckless +15 campaign can push that milestone back a week. Decide your Zen floor before you start combining and stop when you reach it.
For jewel income, events beat open farming for most players: Blood Castle, Devil Square and Chaos Castle run all day and their live times are on the events page. Drop rates differ by realm on RiftMu: the Permanent Realm has medium jewel drop rates, while the Speed Realm Summer Edition drops jewels at a higher rate, including the high-end line (High Kingz, Emperor, Supreme, Volt). The Vibrant Jewel has a chance to drop from Kingz Dragon and Giant Treasure. Keep a working float of Bless and Soul in your vault rather than spending every jewel the day it drops — the ladder always finds a use for them.
Common mistakes
- Burning jewels on low-tier gear before you have resets. That +9 short sword will be vendor food in three days; the jewels would not have been.
- Pushing +7 to +9 on a plain item when a Luck version is obtainable. You are volunteering for worse odds on every Soul and every Chaos Machine attempt afterwards.
- Gambling your only copy at +13 to +15. Failure handling varies by server; assume the worst until you have tested it with a spare.
- Ignoring the displayed Chaos Machine rate. If the number looks bad, add mix value or walk away — hoping is not a strategy.
- Levelling the whole set evenly from day one. Front-load the weapon; a fast-killing character out-earns a tanky one at this stage.
- Draining your Zen below the Grand Reset fee. On RiftMu that is 50,000,000 Zen you must hand over eventually — treat it as untouchable.
