Socket Items on RiftMu: Seeds, Spheres and Socket Weapons Explained

Last updated: 13 July 2026

Socket items are weapons and armor with 1 to 5 empty slots built in. Fill those slots with elemental Seed Spheres and the item gains extra elemental damage, defense or attack-success options on top of its normal stats - options no amount of Excellent or Ancient rolling can give you. This guide covers where sockets come from, how to fill and level up the Spheres that go in them, and the two ways to get a socket item in the first place: building one from scratch, or upgrading an existing one into a fresh, higher tier.

Where sockets come from

You don't choose how many sockets an item has - it's rolled at the moment the item is created, and the odds get steep fast. On most weapon and armor types the distribution is:

Item type1 socket2345
Swords, axes, maces, bows, staffs, shields, helmets, armors, pants, gloves, boots, two-hand weapons60%40%30%15%7.5%
Spears40%20%15%3%1.5%
Necklaces70%25%5%--

These are independent odds per slot count, not a guarantee you'll see every socket item at every tier - a 5-socket sword really is a rare find. Spears are deliberately the worst socket item in the game; if you're chasing a 4 or 5-socket piece, pick almost anything else.

Filling sockets: Seeds and Seed Spheres

An empty socket does nothing by itself. To activate it you need a Seed Sphere of a matching element - Fire, Water, Ice, Wind, Lightning or Earth - composed from base Seeds and then set into the slot. Four operations cover the whole process, all through the socket NPC:

OperationWhat it doesCostSuccess rate
Extract SeedPulls a raw Seed out for use in composing a Sphere1,000,000 ZenGuaranteed
Compose Seed SphereCombines Seeds into a Seed Sphere at the level you want1,000,000 ZenGuaranteed
Set Seed SpherePlaces a finished Sphere into an empty socket1,000,000 ZenGuaranteed
Remove Seed SphereTakes a Sphere back out of a socket1,000,000 Zen90%

Extracting, composing and setting are all guaranteed to work. Removing a finished Sphere from a socket is the only step of these four with any risk, and it's a mild one.

Leveling up a Seed Sphere

A freshly composed Seed Sphere is only the starting point - its bonus grows if you level it up, consuming duplicate spheres and a seed material each attempt. This is genuinely the riskiest part of the entire socket system, and it's easy to miss because it's a separate step from anything covered above.

StageSuccess rateZen per attempt
Early levels90%10,000,000
Mid levels87% – 89%13,000,000 – 22,000,000
Hardest levels70% (floor)rising with each step

Plan your spare spheres before you start

Every level-up attempt consumes duplicate Seed Spheres as fodder, and the top of the ladder only succeeds 70% of the time. Farm or buy extra spheres before you push a level you can't afford to fail - the full 114-step ladder and its current numbers live on the Socket Systems success rate table.

Building a Socket Weapon from scratch

If you're not starting from a socket item at all, the Chaos Machine has a dedicated Socket Weapon combination that turns a regular item into one with sockets. Success rate and full recipes for every combination system on the server - including this one - live on the Success Rates page, which reads straight from the live server config, so it's always current.

Socket Item Tier Upgrade: the late-game recipe

Once you already have a two-socket item at +11 through +15, there's a second, separate system: the Socket Item Tier Upgrade. It doesn't add sockets to a new item - it consumes your existing one entirely and rebuilds it as a brand new +0 item of the next tier, with sockets re-rolled fresh.

RequirementDetail
Input item+11 to +15, at least 2 empty sockets, 118 different gear pieces are eligible
Materials1x Socket Upgrade Note, 5x Jewel of Bless, 5x Jewel of Soul, 1x Jewel of Chaos
Cost10,000,000 Zen
OutputFresh +0 item, 20% chance of a random skill, 20% chance of random luck, socket count re-rolled (85% for 1 socket, 10% for 2, 5% for 3)

Check the Socket Systems success rate for the exact current chance - it's set well above a coin flip, but your item and materials are spent either way, so only attempt this with spares in the bank.

Quick recap

  1. Get a socket item - either roll one from the Socket Weapon combine, or find one from a drop (check Item Hunt for where specific pieces show up).
  2. Extract, compose and set Seed Spheres matching the element you want in each socket - all three steps are guaranteed to work.
  3. Level up your Spheres before you commit to them long-term - this is the step with real risk, from 90% down to a 70% floor at the hardest levels.
  4. Once it's +11 to +15 with spare sockets, consider the Tier Upgrade to jump it to a fresh higher-tier item instead of grinding a new one from zero.
  5. Only remove a Sphere when you can afford the small chance it doesn't come back out.

FAQ

How many sockets can an item have?

Up to 5 on most weapons and armor, but the socket count is random when the item is created and the odds fall off sharply - roughly 60% for 1 socket down to under 8% for all 5 on most weapon types. Necklaces only ever roll 1 to 3.

Is leveling up a Seed Sphere risky?

Yes - it's the riskiest part of the whole socket system. Early sphere levels succeed 90% of the time, but the rate steps down as you push higher, down to a floor of 70% at the hardest steps. Removing a finished Sphere from a socket is a separate, much simpler roll at 90%.

What is the difference between a Socket Weapon combine and a Socket Item Tier Upgrade?

The Socket Weapon combine turns a normal item into a socket item from scratch. The Tier Upgrade takes an existing +11 to +15 two-socket item and rebuilds it as a fresh +0 item with a re-rolled socket count and a chance at random skill and luck - a completely different, later-game recipe.
